We had barely started walking when Conor spotted an opening that led us right to the lake. As we stepped closer, he noticed movement in the water—it was an American beaver family. These semi-aquatic rodents have shaped the West for centuries. Once trapped for their fur, they helped drive exploration and trade across this region.

That day, I watched what was likely a male adult and a young kit. Beaver dads are the teachers—they show their kits how to forage, and I got to witness them sharing a meal of aspens, one of their favorite foods. They were fast, graceful swimmers—able to reach 5 miles an hour and stay underwater for up to 15 minutes. We never did find their lodge, but just seeing them was enough.
